Steven Engravalle is an inspiring, passionate, and experienced 21st century educational leader with documented success of facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community. In his work, he is dedicated to nurturing and sustaining an organizational culture, climate, and instructional program that promotes rigorous and relevant student learning and growth, as well as, ongoing professional development of all staff. Mr. Engravalle most recently served as the Superintendent of the Fort Lee Public Schools. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Literature from Ramapo College of New Jersey, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Nova Southeastern University in Florida, and a Masters of Arts in Educational Administration from New Jersey City University. Mr. Engravalle is also "All But Dissertation" status towards his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. Prior to his term in Fort Lee, Mr. Engravalle was the Chief School Administrator of the Hamburg School District in Hamburg, New Jersey. During his tenure in Hamburg, he led a full revision of all district curricula and an update and/or enhancement to all program offerings along with the implementation of innovative technologies in the classroom and central office, which led to increased student achievement and fiscal solvency for the district. Understanding the importance of well-managed and safe schools, Mr. Engravalle also upgraded all district facilities and developed and implemented district-wide school safety policies, procedures, and practices in coordination with local, county, and state officials. Additionally, Mr. Engravalle is honored and proud to have served as the Chair of the State Technology Committee for the New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NJASA). A simple country boy, you might say a cockeyed optimist, who got himself mixed up in the high-stakes game of world diplomacy and international intrigue.

  • Superintendent of Schools at Fort Lee Public Schools

    November 2011 - March 2013 | Fort Lee, New Jersey

    Steven Engravalle served as Superintendent and Chief Education Officer for of a Pre-K through 12 Bergen County, New Jersey school district with approximately 3,800 students, six schools, over 400 staff members, and a budget of more than $59 million. In the role, Mr. Engravalle was an ex-officio member of the Board of Education and charged with administering Board policies and all operations of the district. NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS (Partial List): - Increased student achievement and SAT results - Successfully passed $30,206,077 bond referendum on first attempt, after at least three failed attempts by previous administrations, making the district eligible for $9,775,611 in state reimbursement - Eliminated redundant services and decreased spending resulting in a savings of over $2 million - Revised all curricula to provide for technology integration and horizontal and vertical alignment - Directed and supervised the acquisition of over $1 million in new texts and resources district-wide to ensure each child was granted access to the same resources and materials for the first time in 29 years - Conceived and guided technological innovations including a revision to the district's out-dated technology plan; creating a paperless central administration and board of education; mandating digital staff evaluations; instituting online grading and student data management; planning for districtwide wifi; implementing Google Apps for Education and Chromebooks - Redrafted and updated district policy manual - Devised and implemented districtwide school security improvements - Favorably negotiated the reinstatement of full-time School Resource Officer at high school campus - Once again, revolutionized school security by working with MapEverywhere(R) to harness the power of their MapOS(R) point-to-point navigation software for use in schools and other public buildings - Protected and counseled the district through tumultuous times that included the tragic deaths of two high school pupils

    Mr. Engravalle was appointed by the Governor as one of the seven representatives from the public and private sectors to serve on the New Jersey Education Funding Task Force to evaluate the effectiveness of the Free and Reduced Price School Lunch Program as a proxy for measuring "at risk" students and, more broadly, make recommendations to address areas of the school funding formula that may be subject to manipulation, fraud, or distortion, including municipal tax abatement programs, in effort to ensure that education dollars are distributed in a more equitable manner for every child in New Jersey.

    Mr. Engravalle is honored and proud to have served as the Chair of the State Technology Committee for the New Jersey Association of School Administrators* (NJASA). Through this position, Mr. Engravalle collaborated with the New Jersey Department of Education and all school district leaders statewide to promote technological innovations in all of New Jersey's schools that enhance pedagogical practices to develop 21st century learners and advance fiscally responsible, thorough, and efficient school district operations. Steven Engravalle's Interests & Activities:

I am interested in advising or consulting on serious, innovative projects in my areas of interest and expertise (pedagogy, school law, education policy and reform, and educational technology). I will also consider working with non-profits using innovation, particularly education policy/reform and instructional technology, to improve society and the American educational system. Generally, I prefer administrative or board-level roles when working with entrepreneurs who share my goal of improving the world, while launching successful products and businesses. I will also speak to and/or advise legislators, journalists, television reporters, venture capitalists, CEO/CFOs, or any credible person wishing to understand what is really happening in the field of education in America today. Because I am always in the middle of several projects, my time is extremely limited.
